Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week
February 5, 2008


WACO, Texas –
Jeremy Macklin of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas) and Joel Torres of Bacone College (Okla.) were named the Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week for Jan. 28-Feb. 3. HT’s Travis O’Donnell and Bacone’s Rick Sample were honored as the RRAC Baseball Pitchers of the Week for the same dates.

Macklin, a junior rightfielder from Austin, Texas, went 10-for-17 at the plate (.588) through a six-game stretch for the Rams last week. He drove in seven runs and scored nine times while posting at least one hit in each game. He capped the week by going 3-for-4 with a pair of triples and four RBIs in a 17-12 loss to Southern Nazarene University (Okla.). He also had three stolen bases and three walks for HT, which is 3-5 on the season.

Torres, a senior second baseman from Caguas, P.R., homered in his first two at-bats of the season to propel Bacone to a 2-0 start. In the season opener against Williams Baptist University (Ark.), he went 2-for-4 with 5 RBIs en route to a 13-3 win. In the second game, he provided a spark with two hits, two stolen bases and a run scored to lift Bacone to a 6-2 victory over WBU.

O’Donnell, a senior outfielder/pitcher from Austin, Texas, tossed a two-hit shutout for a 4-0 victory over SNU. In seven innings of work, he accounted for eight strikeouts and allowed just three walks.

Sample, a junior righthander from Sacramento, Calif., entered in relief and threw five scoreless innings as Bacone won in extra frames, 6-2, over WBU. He allowed just two hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Other player nominees included Brandon Frazier of Texas Wesleyan University (Texas), Gabe Hensley of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas) and Alexis Ruiz of Wiley College (Texas). Wiley’s Juan Soto was also nominated for this week’s pitcher award.
