Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week
February 12, 2008


WACO, Texas –
Joel Torres of Bacone College (Okla.) earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for Feb. 4-10, while Jayson Rachuig of Texas Wesleyan University was named the RRAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the same dates.

Torres, a senior second baseman from Caguas, P.R., went 7-for-10 at the plate last week as the Warriors went 2-2 against Sooner Athletic Conference competition. He was 2-for-4 at the plate as Bacone dropped a pair of games against Oklahoma City University, and then went 5-for-6 with five runs scored as the Warriors won both games of a double-header against Northwestern Oklahoma State University. For the week, Torres drove in four runs, walked six times and was 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts. Bacone is 4-2 on the season.

Rachuig, a senior right-hander from Fort Worth, Texas, tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings as the Rams won, 7-0, over Lubbock Christian University (Texas). He held the NAIA’s #7 team to just four hits and two walks after LCU had been averaging 13 runs per game. Rachuig struck out one batter as TWU moved to 2-3 on the season.

Other player nominees included Brandon Frazier of Texas Wesleyan University (Texas) and Miguel Vasquez of Wiley College (Texas). James Mullenax of Texas College, Wiley’s Juan Soto and Bacone’s Dan Wheeler were also nominated for this week’s pitcher award.
