WACO, Texas –
Theo Nabassi of Texas Wesleyan University earned recognition as the Red
River Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for
games played during the dates of Aug. 27-Sept. 4, while Collin Whiting
of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas) was named the RRAC Men’s Soccer
Defensive Player of the Week.
Nabassi, a freshman forward from Lome, Togo, started his collegiate
career with a bang. He netted two goals in the Rams’ season-opening 3-2
victory over Manhattan Christian College. The goals came in dramatic
fashion, the first tying the game at 2-2 with 1:36 remaining in
regulation and the second giving TWU the win with 15 seconds left in
overtime. Nabassi also chipped in a goal in a 2-1 loss to Oklahoma City
University as TWU started the season at 1-1.
Whiting, a freshman defender from Humble, Texas, helped HTU hold
Oklahoma Christian University to one goal and accounted for two goals in
a 3-1 victory. The win was HTU’s first of the season, moving its record
to 1-1-1.
Additional nominees for offensive player of the week included Frank
Toscano of HTU and Ernest Villareal of Northwood University (Texas).
Ekene Onuoha of TWU and Ranger Parrish of Northwood were also nominated
for defensive player of the week.
