RRAC Women's Soccer Players of the Week

WACO, Texas –
The University of Texas-Brownsville’s Lena Candia earned her third consecutive award for Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while her teammate, Carling Rootes was named the RRAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 10-16.

Candia, a junior midfielder/forward from Malmo, Sweden, added to her conference-leading goal total with four goals and two assists in two matches last week. She contributed a goal and an assist in the Scorpions’ 3-2 win over McPherson College (Kan.), then knocked in three goals with an assist on another to top York College (Neb.), 5-0. UTB moves to 5-2 on the season with all of its games played on the road to this point.

Rootes, a freshman defender from Calgary, Alb., helped UTB hold its opponents to only a pair of goals in two games. Against York, Rootes and company didn’t allow a single shot on goal.

Brianna McKernon of Texas Wesleyan University was also nominated for the offensive award with two goals and an assist in a victory over St. Gregory’s University (Okla.). Defender Danielle Parks of TWU was nominated in the defensive category.
