Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week
April 29, 2008

WACO, Texas –
Lateah Lucero of Texas Wesleyan University earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for April 21-27, while her teammate, Ashley Tarrant, captured the RRAC’s weekly pitcher award for the same dates.

Lucero, a freshman shortstop from Pilot Point, Texas, had a busy week with 20 hits in 30 plate appearances as the Lady Rams won six of eight games. She notched five hits and drove in two runs in a doubleheader sweep of Texas College then added five more hits and four RBIs as TWU took two from Jarvis Christian College (Texas). In a sweep of Langston University (Okla.), she piled up eight more hits and scored six times. For the week, Lucero accounted for 14 runs scored, 11 RBIs, three doubles and a triple. TWU wrapped up the regular season at 18-29 and 17-7 in conference play.

Tarrant, a freshman pitcher from Martin’s Mill, Texas, tossed her second no-hitter in a week as she struck out 14 hitters to claim a shutout victory over JCC. She nearly made it two in a row with a complete-game, one-hit effort to knock off Langston University. On Saturday, Tarrant turned in 6 2/3 scoreless innings against Lousiana State University-Alexandria before allowing the Generals to score twice to tie the game and eventually lost the game, 4-3, in extra innings. For the week, she struck out 32 hitters in 18 innings of work.

Paula Davis of Northwood University (Texas), Alex Ramirez of Bacone College (Okla.) and Ashley Turner of College of the Southwest (N.M.) were additional player of the week nominees. Bacone’s Robin Chriestenson was also nominated for pitcher of the week.
