WACO, Texas -- Matt Warner of the University of Texas-Brownsville was selected as the Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Drew Cavender of Texas Wesleyan University was named the RRAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the dates of Feb. 1-7.
Warner, a junior left fielder from Henderson, Nev., drove in 10 runs including a walk-off home run in the final game of a four-game series sweep for UTB over the University of Houston-Victoria. Second in the country now with 12 RBIs, Warner went 6-for-12 this week with four walks and four stolen bases. In a 13-0 win in the second game against UHV, he was 2-for-3 with four RBIs. He added a triple and a pair of RBIs in the third game of the series before capping the week with a two-run blast for an 8-6 Scorpion victory. UTB is now 5-3 on the season.
Cavender, a junior right-hander from Ballard, Texas, allowed just one hit in 5 2/3 innings of relief for the Rams last week. He faced five hitters and struck out three against Southwestern University (Texas). Cavender returned with five strikeouts in four shutout innings to earn a win in a 1-0 defeat of the NAIA's top-ranked team, Lubbock Christian University (Texas). TWU is 2-3 on the season.
