WACO, Texas -- Taylor Jones of Northwood University (Texas) earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 15-21, while her teammate, Larissa Garcia, was honored as the RRAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the same dates.
Jones, a freshman pitcher from Plano, Texas, helped her cause by scoring three runs and driving in seven this week. She had a run-scoring double in a 2-0 win over the University of Science & Arts (Okla.) to start the week. Jones capped the week by hitting home runs in consecutive at-bats in a three-hit, five-RBI performance to dominate USAO, 8-2. Northwood went 3-2 on the week and leveled its record at 5-5 on the season.
Garcia, a freshman pitcher from San Antonio, Texas, picked up three wins and allowed just one earned run in 21 innings of work for the Lady Knights. She tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout of Graceland University (Iowa) to open the week while striking out 10 hitters. In her next start, she recorded another shutout, scattering five hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts. Garcia also picked up the victory over USAO in the final game of the week, allowing one run on four hits.
Samantha Guerrero of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas), Lateah Lucero of Texas Wesleyan University and Katie Poirier of the University of the Southwest (N.M.) were additional player of the week nominees. Other nominees for this week's pitcher award included USW's Ruby Garza, OLLU's Melanie Gonzalez and TWU's Ashley Oldham.
