WACO, Texas -- Derrick Roland of Bacone College (Okla.) and Jeff Sakowski of Northwood University (Texas) were named Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week for Feb. 15-21, while Joey Evans of Texas Wesleyan University earned this week's Pitcher of the Week honor.
Roland, a sophomore third baseman from Muskogee, Okla., went 12-for-18 at the plate in a 5-1 week for the Warriors. In a 9-5 win over Oklahoma Christian University, he was 4-for-4 with one RBI. He capped the week by going 4-for-5 and driving in four runs in a double-header sweep of Evangel University (Mo.). For the week, Roland racked up three doubles, three walks and eight RBIs as Bacone advanced to 6-5 on the season.
Sakowski, a senior outfielder from Arlington, Texas, blasted three home runs and eight RBIs as the Knights won all five of their games last week. He went 2-for-3 and scored three times in a 14-3 win over College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Friday. In a double-header with Ozarks on Saturday, Sakowski boosted his totals with a 4-for-5 performance including all three of his homers and six RBIs. He was 7-for-17 in all with seven runs scored for Northwood, which now has a record of 10-5.
Evans, a senior pitcher from Tyler, Texas, threw five hitless innings to collect his first win of the season, 3-1, over Louisiana State University-Alexandria. He allowed just four base runners while striking out three. The Rams moved to 5-3 on the season.
George Rose of Texas College and TWU's Nick Schrock were additional nominees for this week's player award. Bacone's Ryan Brewer, Danny Gidora of the University of Texas-Brownsville, TC's David Kipp and Northwood's Trent Montgomery were nominated for the pitcher of the week award.
