WACO, Texas -- Jamel White of Texas Wesleyan University and Ladarren Williams of Texas College were selected as Red River Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Co-Players of the Week for Feb. 22-28, the final regular season award of the 2009-10 season.
White, a senior forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., pushed the Rams to the conference championship by nearly reaching a triple-double (34 points, eight rebounds, eight assists) in the clinching game on Saturday. TWU defeated Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas), 87-85, as White made 13-of-17 shots including seven three-pointers. He also scored 34 in a victory over Langston University (Okla.) earlier in the week as the Rams won two of three games. White averaged 28.0 points and 5.0 assists per game for the week. TWU held the tie-breaker advantage over OLLU after both teams finished the season at 16-4 in conference play and will enter the RRAC tournament as the top seed this week.
Williams, a sophomore forward from Arlington, Texas, led the Steers to two wins last week and the third spot in the final conference standings. He scored 26 points and grabbed 16 boards in an 80-70 win over Wiley College (Texas) before racking up another double-double with 18 and 11 against Jarvis Christian College (Texas). In the two games, Williams sank 14-of-18 shots from field goal range (77.8%), including 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc. Texas College is 14-5 in conference play with a mark of 19-9 on the season.
Additional nominees included Langston's Catrell Currie and Darrell Glover of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas).
