WACO, Texas -- Haley Butler of Texas Wesleyan University earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for March 1-7, while Ruby Garza of University of the Southwest (N.M.) and TWU's Ashley Oldham were named RRAC Softball Co-Pitchers of the Week for the same dates.
Butler, a junior catcher from Athens, Texas, went 9-for-15 at the plate in a 3-1 week for the Lady Rams. She collected five hits with a triple and a pair of RBIs as TWU split a double-header with USW. She added a double, four hits and three RBIs in a two-game sweep of Texas College on Sunday. Butler scored five runs with multiple hits in all four games. TWU improved to 9-6 on the season.
Garza, a senior pitcher from El Paso, Texas, picked up a pair of wins while allowing just one run last week. She earned a 2-1 victory over TWU in a complete game effort while scattering eight hits and striking out three. Garza followed with four scoreless innings of work and eight strikeouts in an 8-0 defeat of Langston University (Texas). USW is now 10-6 overall.
Oldham, a senior pitcher from Watauga, Texas, also went 2-0 on the mound while allowing just one earned run last week. She earned a victory in the first game against USW, striking out seven hitters and scattering nine hits in 7 2/3 innings of work. Oldham then sat down the first 14 hitters she faced at Texas College en route to 13 strikeouts and a two-hit shutout.
Naomi Benevides of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas), Angelique Meek of Northwood University (Texas), Bridgette Rodriguez of University of the Southwest (N.M.) and Dawn Villegas of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) were also nominated for player of the week. Northwood's Claudia Flores, HT's Lynda Leyva and OLLU's Tiffany Stritz were additional pitcher of the week nominees.
