TWU's Lucero is second in the NAIA with 37 steals on the season.
WACO, Texas -- Lateah Lucero of Texas Wesleyan University was rewarded for all-around productivity with the Red River Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week award for March 29-April 4, and TWU's Ashley Oldham and Claudia Flores of Northwood University (Texas) earned a share of RRAC Softball Pitcher of the Week honors for the same dates. Lucero also received NAIA national player of the week honors. (Click here for NAIA release.)
Lucero, a junior shortstop from Pilot Point, Texas, was recognized for the second time this season after scoring 11 runs and stealing 10 bases to lead the Lady Rams to a 6-0 week. Her stolen base count moved to 37 on the season, which is second best in the nation. At the plate, Lucero had multiple hits in all six games while hitting on 14-of-21 plate appearances. She collected a pair of 3-for-3 games with one each against Langston University (Okla.) and Texas College. Lucero closed the week by going 4-for-7 with three runs scored and three stolen bases as TWU swept a double-header to overtake conference frontrunner Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas). TWU is now 12-2 in conference play and 20-11 on the season.
Flores, a senior pitcher from Midlothian, Texas, tossed a no-hit, no-walk shutout of Langston for an 8-0 win in her return from a back injury. She struck out six in five innings of work. Northwood is now 10-4 in the RRAC and 19-17 overall.
Oldham, a senior pitcher from Watauga, Texas, picked up three of the Lady Rams' victories in four appearances last week. She allowed no runs and only six hits in 14.1 innings of work. Oldham's two complete-game shutouts of Langston and OLLU established a new TWU career record with 14. She also earned a victory by recording the final out in a 3-2 game one win over OLLU before going seven innings with six strikeouts to win the second game, 6-0. Oldham struck out 18 hitters on the week.
Northwood's Angelique Meek was also nominated for player of the week, while Chrissy Hood of Bacone College (Okla.) was a pitcher of the week nominee.
