Villegas leads all RRAC hitters with a .444 average on the season through April 11.
WACO, Texas -- Alex Ramirez of Bacone College (Okla.) and Dawn Villegas of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week award for April 5-11, while OLLU's Tiffany Stritz snared the RRAC Softball Pitcher of the Week honor for the same dates.
Ramirez, a senior second baseman from LaPorte, Texas, scored six runs and drove in nine in a 4-1 week for the Lady Warriors against non-conference competition in the Border Wars Tournament. She went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in Bacone's only loss of the week, a 6-5 defeat against host Rogers State University (Okla.). She registered two RBIs in three other games including a pair of hits against Tabor College (Kan.) and her fourth double of the week in a victory over Kansas Wesleyan University. Ramirez finished with an 8-for-18 week at the plate (.444) as Bacone improved to 20-18 overall and remained at 13-5 in conference play.
Villegas, a freshman pitcher from San Marcos, Texas, went 5-for-7 hitting with a pair of home runs in a double-header split between RRAC frontrunners OLLU and Texas Wesleyan University. She homered twice and drove in all of the Lady Saints' runs in a 7-5 loss in the opener. Villegas added two more hits and two RBIs as OLLU won the second game, 7-1. The Lady Saints are in second place at 18-6 in the RRAC and 23-13 on the season.
Stritz, a junior pitcher from Houston, earned the victory in game two against TWU by going seven innings and allowing only one unearned run. She scattered eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
TWU's Hopie Perez was also nominated for player of the week, while Bacone's Chrissy Hood and TWU's Ashley Oldham were pitcher of the week nominees.
