WACO, Texas -- Matt Ginn of the University of Texas-Brownsville and Yasel Gomez of Bacone College (Okla.) earned Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Co-Player of the Week honors for April 19-25, while Kane Kimrey of Northwood University (Texas) picked up the RRAC Pitcher of the Week award for the same dates.
Ginn, a sophomore first baseman from Midlothian, Ill., made the most of his only game of the week by blasting a pair of home runs and reaching base on five of seven plate appearances. He went 3-for-5 with a solo shot and a two-run homer in addition to two walks (one intentional) as the Scorpions sank Texas A&M International University, 9-7. Ginn established a new season home run record for UTB (as an NAIA member) in the process with his ninth of the season. UTB is 7-5 in the RRAC South division with a record of 26-20 overall.
Gomez, a junior shortstop from Miami, Fla., went 6-for-13 with five RBIs in a three-game series sweep over the University of the Southwest (N.M.). He was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs in the middle game, an 11-5 Warrior victory. Gomez closed with three more hits on two homers and a double in the finale as Bacone escaped, 15-11. The Warriors are 7-5 in the RRAC North and 20-24 on the season.
Kimrey, a junior right-hander from Rowlett, Texas, earned two wins while allowing just one earned run last week. In seven innings, he allowed just five hits and struck out four for an 11-3 victory over Texas Wesleyan University. Kimrey followed by surrendering just one run on four hits to mow down the University of Houston-Victoria (Texas), 11-1. He finished with nine strikeouts and no walks in 13 innings of work.
TWU's Jerry Fisher and Northwood's Adam Humes were also nominated for player of the week, while TWU's Joey Evans and Bacone's Joey Zrinzo were additional pitcher of the week candidates.
