WACO, Texas -- Arlene Ferreira of the University of Texas-Brownsville earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 14-20. Other weekly honorees included Hitter of the Week Brittani Toole of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas), Setter of the Week Rachel Brown of SAGU and Libero of the Week Anayeli Trevino of UTB.
Ferreira, a sophomore outside hitter from Uberlandia, Brazil, connected for 31 kills on 53 total attempts as the Scorpions swept three opponents last week. She recorded a high of nine digs as UTB defeated Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) and had a high of 17 kills on 28 attempts to slam Davenport University (Mich.). Ferreira's hitting percentage was .453 as the 14th-ranked Scorpions stretched their record to 13-1 on the season.
Toole, a junior middle hitter from Whitehouse, Texas, recorded double-figure totals in kills as the Lady Lions won both of their matches last week. She compiled 26 kills on 44 total attempts with only five errors. Toole averaged 4.33 kills per game and added 11 digs. SAGU moved to 12-1 on the season.
Brown, a senior setter from Seguin, Texas, repeated as the winner of the award with assist totals of 28 and 35 in SAGU's matches. She averaged 10.5 assists per game and contributed six kills and eight digs for the Lady Lions.
Trevino, a sophomore defensive specialist from Brownsville, Texas, provided 43 digs on the week for the Scorpions with a high of 19 against OLLU. She averaged 5.38 digs per game and extended her streak of double-digit dig matches to six.
Additional Player of the Week nominees included Destiny Clemons of Texas Wesleyan University, SAGU's Kelani Daniels and Shelia Green of Texas College with Clemons, Ferreira and Green being nominated for this week's Hitter award. TWU's Angelica Arroyo, UTB's Daianarah Bracero and TC's Amber Girdy were nominated for this week's Setter award, while SAGU's Tina Brown, TWU's Kristina Harris and TC's Roxanne Martinez were Libero nominees.
