COLUMBIA, Mo. -- UTB/TSC put on a solid performance with a 3-1 victory over Columbia College in their NAIA Volleyball Match of the Week Saturday in the Quality Inn Classic.

Eighth-ranked UTB/TSC remains undefeated with a 7-0 mark and handed seventh-ranked Columbia its first loss of the season. The Cougars are now 4-1.

Scorpion setter Paula Barros was named the Most Valuable Player in the tournament. Outside hitters Erica Chimak and Danica Markovic were also named to the 12-player all-tournament team.
There were no other meetings around the country of two teams ranked in the Top 10.

The Scorpions won the first game, 25-19, but Columbia came back to win the second set, 25-21. UTB/TSC had a 19-17 lead in the second set before the Cougars rallied.

The Scorpions scored the final two points after a 23-23 tie to take a 25-23 win in the third set, and closed out the match with a convincing 24-12 win in the fourth set.

"We cleaned up our serve receives and improved our serves in the final set," Scorpion head coach Todd Lowery said. "We got some big blocks and big times and we just kind of rolled. We defensed a lot of balls and a lot of balls that they hit well."

When the next NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll comes out Tuesday, the Scorpions are likely to jump ahead of Columbia in the new poll.

"They made a few mental mistakes and we put a lot of pressure," Lowery said. "I think we showed tonight what we are capable of. When we serve receive well, we are a handful to deal with."

UTB/TSC returns home Sunday from its Missouri trip and has one more road match remaining Tuesday against Huston-Tillotson University in Austin. The match will end a string of eight straight road competitions for the Scorpions to start the season.

The Scorpions will be home for their first match of the season Sept. 14 against Our Lady of the Lake University.
