WACO, Texas -- Mario Perez of the University of Texas-Brownsville stood out as the Red River Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 14-20, and Joakim Soderbaum of Texas Wesleyan University received this week's defensive award.
Perez, a freshman forward from Brownsville, Texas, accounted for a pair of goals and two assists in a 2-0-1 week for the Scorpions. His two assists provided the difference in a 4-2 victory over Texas A&M International University, and he scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over the University of Mobile (Ala.). Perez added another goal in a 3-3 tie with Belhaven College (Miss.). UTB is 5-0-1 overall.
Soderbaum, a junior goalkeeper from Varberg, Sweden, moved to 4-0 on the season with a 3-1 Ram victory over St. Gregory's University (Okla.). He stopped eight of nine shots to earn the win.
Additional nominees for the offensive award included Adis Druzanovic of Texas Wesleyan University and Erwin Madrid of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas), while Marco Herrerra of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas), HT's Victor Rodriguez and UTB's Chris Scott were defensive nominees.
