Following their return to Victoria, Texas, after evacuating the city due to Hurricane Harvey, The University of Houston-Victoria men's and women's soccer teams hit the ground running.

The teams, which returned on Sept. 16, hit the field for a light workout the next morning and then spent the afternoon helping in the recovery efforts in Victoria.

Team members and coaches working through the Samaritan's Purse International Relief program spent several hours helping Victorians clean up from the aftermath of the Category 4 hurricane which hit Victoria on Aug. 25.

"This is what it is all about, giving back to the community," said UHV head soccer coach Adrian Rigby.

The group spent the afternoon trimming fallen trees and moving tree limbs as well as helping families whose homes were flooded by the Guadalupe River during the storm. This included tearing out damaged drywall, removing flooring, tarping roofs, and clearing debris.

Samaritan's Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization that provides spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. When a disaster strikes, Samaritan's Purse partners with a local church whose facility and congregation are able and willing to help host the teams of volunteers and staff.

The group mobilizes staff and equipment and enlists thousands of volunteers to provide emergency aid to victims of tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other natural disasters in the United States.

The Jaguars turned their attention back to the field after two weeks away to prepare for their season-opening matches later that week. Each team has had to cancel four games due to Hurricane Harvey.

Anyone wanting to volunteer with Samaritan's Purse may do so by going to their website at or you can go by the organization's Victoria location located at Faith Family Church.
