WACO, Texas -- Kevin Smith of LSU Shreveport garnered Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week recognition for the period of March 7-13, while Julian Moya of the University of Texas-Brownsville earned the RRAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week honor for the same dates.
Smith, a senior first baseman from Tacoma, Wash., drove in 14 runs in a 4-0 week for the Pilots that included a victory over the nation's top-ranked team, Cumberland University (Tenn.). He went 3-for-5 at the plate including a pair of home runs and five RBIs as LSUS won at home, 9-4. Smith was just as impressive in a three-game sweep of Texas College with four hits in the opening game and six RBIs in the second as the Pilots rolled to a 16-9 win. For the week, he was 11-for-15 hitting (.733) with a double, triple, three walks and two homers. LSUS is 12-0 in conference play and 19-7 on the season.
Moya, a senior pitcher from Brownsville, Texas, broke his own school record with 14 strikeouts in a seven-inning effort to defeat Jarvis Christian College (Texas), 12-0. He allowed just three hits and a walk to earn the win and run his record to 2-3 overall. Moya is second in the conference in strikeouts per nine innings. UTB is 13-2 in the RRAC and 18-5 overall.
Additional player nominees included Keenan Allison of Wiley College (Texas), Peter Maldonado of UTB, Glen Morrison of Texas Wesleyan University and Nico Taylor of Northwood University (Texas). Other pitcher nominees included Roberto Cabral of Wiley, Colton Farrar of TWU, Kane Kimrey of Northwood and Jared Mata of LSUS.
