WACO, Texas -- Arlene Ferreira of the University of Texas-Brownsville  earned Red River Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week recognition for the dates of Oct. 5-11. The conference's weekly award winners also included Hitter of the Week Samantha Mendez of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas), Setter of the Week Daianarah Bracero of UTB and Libero of the Week Chelsy Covington of Texas Wesleyan University.

Ferreira, a sophomore outside hitter from Uberlandia, Brazil, is a repeat winner of the player of the week award and the leader of the nation's 12th-ranked team. En route to a 3-0 week for the Scorpions, she averaged 3.22 kills per game and a hitting percentage of .286. Ferreira posted 10 kills and 17 digs in a 3-0 sweep of NCAA member Trinity University (Texas) in addition to another double-double against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas). UTB kept its lock on first place in the conference at 8-0 with a 21-1 mark on the season.

Mendez, a senior outside hitter from Natalia, Texas, connected for 12 kills in 18 attempts with one error in an 0-2 week for the Lady Rams. Her hitting percentage was .500 for the two matches, and she had four service aces and eight blocks. HT is now 3-5 and 4-19.

Bracero, a senior setter from Sabana Grande, P.R., won again this week with 95 assists in UTB's three victories. She registered 38 against SAGU and added 32 to defeat Trinity. Bracero also contributed 12 kills and eight digs.

Covington, a sophomore libero from Hutto, Texas, added another award with 58 digs, or 5.8 per game, in TWU's three matches last week. She posted 23 digs against HT and 20 in a losing effort to Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas). TWU is 4-4 in conference play and 10-13 for the season.
