WACO, Texas -- Mario Perez of the University of Texas-Brownsville and Oscar Valencia of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for Oct. 3-9, while Lance Quini of LSU Shreveport and Marcos Sanchez of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas) were named RRAC Co-Defensive Players of the Week for the same dates.
Perez, a junior forward from Brownsville, Texas, booted in a pair of goals as the Scorpions won both of their conference battles last week. Perez scored twice in a 5-1 win over Bacone College (Okla.) after UTB defeated Texas College, 6-1, earlier in the week. The Scorpions are 5-0-1 in conference play and 7-3-2 on the season.
Valencia, a freshman from Mission, Texas, accounted for two goals and an assist as the Saints won a pair of RRAC matches. He had a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win over Bacone and chipped in a goal in a matching 6-0 victory over TXC. OLLU is 5-0 in the RRAC and 7-3-1 overall.
Quini, a junior goalkeeper from San Antonio, Texas, picked up a pair of victories while allowing just one score in 154 minutes in goal last week. He collected three saves en route to a 1-0 shutout win over the University of the Southwest (N.M.) and held off Texas Wesleyan University in a 3-1 win. The Pilots are 3-3 in conference and 4-7 overall.
Sanchez, a sophomore goalkeeper from Houston, also limited two RRAC foes to one goal in a 2-0 week for the Rams. He stopped five shots on goal in a 2-1 win over the University of St. Thomas (Texas) and blanked Wiley College (Texas), 2-0, with three saves. HT stands at 6-0 at the top of the RRAC standings with a mark of 10-2 on the season.
TWU's T.J. Romaguera was also nominated for this week's offensive award. OLLU's Nick Garza was an additional defensive nominee.
