Ana Guerra of the University of Texas-Brownsville merited a double award of Red River Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week and Hitter of the Week for the dates of Oct. 24-30. Angelica Arroyo of Texas Wesleyan University collected the RRAC Setter of the Week award, while UTB's Paula Barros and Brittany Downs of the University of St. Thomas (Texas) earned a share of the RRAC Libero of the Week award.
Guerra, a sophomore middle blocker from Sao Paulo, Brazil, averaged 3.5 kills per game in a 1-2 week. She pounded out 18 kills in a loss to NAIA #14 Biola University (Calif.) and 17 against #2 Concordia University (Calif.). Guerra had a total of 42 kills in 88 total attacks with nine errors for a hitting percentage of .375. Top-ranked UTB suffered its first two losses of the season to slip to 23-2 with an 8-0 mark in conference play.
Arroyo, a sophomore setter from Hutto, Texas, set the Lady Rams' offense to a 3-1 record at the Southwestern Halloween Tournament. She equaled her career high of 39 assists in a match against Trinity University (Texas) and then erased that mark with 52 in a 3-1 win over Austin College (Texas). Arroyo had a total of 162 assists or 12.4 per game. TWU is now 3-4 in the RRAC and 13-15 overall.
Barros, a junior libero from Sao Paulo, Brazil, supplied 56 digs for the Scorpions including 24 against Concordia and 23 against Biola. She posted a reception percentage of .765 for UTB and averaged 4.7 digs per game.
Downs, a senior libero from Corpus Christi, Texas, accounted for 89 digs in a 2-3 week for the Lady Celts. She posted a high of 30 in a 3-1 win over East Texas Baptist University and recorded 22 in a loss to Southwestern University (Texas). Downs committed just six receiving errors in 116 attempts. UST is 4-4 in conference play and 17-15 on the season.
Tina Brown of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas), Darly Castillo of Wiley College (Texas) and TWU's Katherine Rosenbusch were also nominated for player/hitter of the week. UTB's Amber Brooks, Wiley's Eileen Burbano, SAGU's Taylor Calverley and UST's Brittany Weiler were setter nominees. Wiley's Erica Brown, SAGU's Laura Espinoza and TWU's Marissa Rangel were nominated for the libero award.
