UTB's Ferreira Won Her Fourth Player of the Week This Season

WACO, Texas - Arlene Ferreira of the University of Texas-Brownsville stood out as the Red River Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for the dates of Oct. 12-18 as the Scorpions continued their winning streak. In other weekly volleyball awards, Jessica Lopez of Wiley College (Texas) and Samantha Mendez of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas) were recognized as the RRAC Co-Hitters of the Week, Angelica Arroyo of Texas Wesleyan University and UTB's Daianarah Bracero as the Co-Setters of the Week, and Jordan Briggs of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas) as the Libero of the Week.

Ferreira, a sophomore outside hitter from Uberlandia, Brazil, added to her multiple weekly awards while powering ninth-ranked UTB to its 21st consecutive victory. She blasted 30 kills on 49 attempts with just six errors for a hitting percentage of .490. She had 17 kills and 11 digs in a key 3-0 sweep of Wiley and added 10 and 10 to defeat Texas College, 3-0. Ferreira leads the RRAC in digs with 4.5 per game. The Scorpions increased their lead in the RRAC to two games at 11-0 with a mark of 24-1 on the season.

Lopez, a junior from Moca, P.R., averaged 2.89 kills per game in a 2-1 week for the Lady Wildcats. In the losing effort against UTB, she pounded 12 kills before posting six kills and 10 digs in a 3-0 defeat of HT. She registered a hitting percentage of .467 with 26 kills as Wiley held on to second in the conference at 9-2 with a 14-4 record overall.

Mendez, a senior middle blocker from Natalia, Texas, accounted for a hitting percentage of .610 on 29 kills in three matches. She was credited with 14 kills on 19 attempts in a 3-2 victory over Jarvis Christian College (Texas) and she committed only four hitting errors on the week. Mendez added nine service aces for the Lady Rams, who are now 4-7 in the conference and have a mark of 5-21 overall. 

Arroyo, a freshman setter from Hutto, Texas, generated 36 assists in TWU's only match of the week, a 3-2 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas). She also contributed eight digs and three service aces for the Lady Rams (5-4, 11-13).

Bracero, a senior setter from Sabana Grande, P.R., averaged 10.9 assists per game in UTB's strong week. She had totals of 39 assists against Wiley and 30 against JCC en route to a total of 98 for the week. Bracero also chipped in nine kills, eight digs and five service aces.

Briggs, a junior setter from Maypearl, Texas, scooped 33 digs as the Lady Lions lost a pair of 3-2 matches. She accounted for 17 in the loss to TWU and 16 against the University of St. Thomas (Texas). SAGU is now third in the RRAC at 6-3, 18-5.
