FORT WORTH, Texas -- Texas Wesleyan University's Eric Frederick has been named the first NAIA National Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week of the 2011-12 season, the national office announced Tuesday. Frederick was selected based on his performances from Dec. 26 - Jan. 1 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.
Frederick averaged 26 points and 13 rebounds in two wins in the Big Easy Challenge played in New Orleans, La. In a 79-75 victory over No. 10 Westminster (Utah) on Dec. 29, the 6-foot-8 senior forward poured in 26 points and snatched 10 rebounds. The next night in an 81-72 win against Dillard (La.), Frederick finished with 26 points and 16 boards. For the week, he shot 58 percent (21 of 36) from the field and 75 percent (9 of 12) from the charity stripe.
The native of Oklahoma City, Okla., ranks fourth in the NAIA in scoring (24.6 ppg) and seventh in total rebounding (10.4 rpg). He has hit for at least 20 points in seven of his nine games played this year.
The Rams are back in action on Thursday, when they host Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas) in RRAC action. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
