TYLER, TX: The 14th ranked Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (9-4, 2-0 RRAC) took a 69-59 win in Red River Athletic Conference action at Texas College (5-5, 0-1) on Thursday. The win marked the 200th of head coach Terry Waldrop's career.
Waldrop, now in his 11th season, is the program's winningest coach with an overall record of 200-123. He led the program to its first National Championship in 2006, and set the school's wins record with his 161st win during the 2007-08 season. Entering this season, Waldrop's Rams ranked third in the State of Texas among four-year institutions in the last five years with 114 wins, trailing only the University of Texas and Texas A&M University.
"I have been blessed to be at Texas Wesleyan with a lot of good players," Waldrop said after the game. "None of this is possible without every one of them or without Brennen Shingleton (Associate Head Coach) and the other great coaches I have been fortunate enough to work with. I am very humbled by the support we get from Kevin Millikan, our Athletic Director, Harold Jeffcoat, our President, and all of the administration."
After Texas College scored the game's first seven points, the Rams stormed back to take a 10-9 lead with a pair of free throws from Terrell Henry. With the game tied at 17, Jeremy Mayfield and Hector Mukweyi combined to score six unanswered points, and the Rams went on to lead 25-22 at the break.
A three from Jamel White capped a 12-2 run early in the second half that put the Rams in command at 40-31. The Steers made a push, closing the score to 42-38 before White and Jeremy Smith both hit threes during an 8-0 run. The Rams cruised through the final eight minutes of the game on their way to the double-figure win.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Steers 50%-33% and dominated the glass, 42-28. Texas Wesleyan also took advantage at the charity stripe hitting 14-of-16 free throws, while Texas College hit just 10-of-20.
White led all scorers with 19 points to go with eight rebounds. Mayfield turned in a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Mukweyi and Smith finished with 11 and 10 points respectively. Trey Manning led the Steers with 16 points.
"We gutted out the game in a tough place to play on road," Waldrop commented. "Texas College has a good team; they are going to win some games this year. I thought we bounced back from an embarrassing game at LSU-Shreveport with a physical performance tonight."
The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Dallas, TX, to take on Paul Quinn College. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
