WACO, Texas -- Ronnie Battle of Bacone College (Okla.) and Jamel White of Texas Wesleyan University earned a split of the Red River Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week award for the dates of Jan. 25-31. Battle also added NAIA National Player of the Week recognition with that honor being announced on Tuesday.
Battle, a senior forward from Elgin, Okla., averaged 32.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Warriors. He lifted Bacone to an 87-79 home victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas) with 30 points and 17 boards before going for 34 points and nine rebounds in an 84-82 loss at the University of the Southwest (N.M.) on Saturday. In the two-game span, Battle connected on 23-of-46 shots from the field and 7-of-14 from three-point range. The Warriors moved to 3-7 in the RRAC and 7-11 on the season.
White, a senior forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., managed 30 points per game, all from the bench, in a 2-1 week for conference front-runner TWU. White posted 32 points, six rebounds and seven assists in a 95-89 defeat of Langston University (Okla.). He then scored a season-high 37 in an overtime win over Huston-Tillotson University (Texas) and topped off the week with 21 in a loss to Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas). For the week, White shot 53.1% from the field (26-of-49) including dropping in 11 three-pointers. He also added 17 rebounds, 13 assists and eight steals for the Rams, who are 9-1 in conference play and 16-5 overall.
Additional nominees included Louis Benson of USW, Titus Butler of HT, Catrell Currie of LU, Ronald Horne of SAGU, Michael Mobley of Wiley College (Texas), Marshall Taylor of Texas College, and Ricardo Zanini of OLLU.
