2008-09 RRAC Basketball Players of the Week

March 9, 2009
WACO, Texas -- Deveon Jenkins of Jarvis Christian College (Texas) was named the Red River Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for March 2-8 after leading the Bulldogs to their first RRAC conference tournament title and a spot in the NAIA national tournament. Ashlea Gray of Langston University (Okla.) earned the RRAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week award after helping the Lady Lions add the RRAC women's tournament title to their regular season championship.

Jenkins, a senior forward from Chicago, Ill., pushed the Bulldogs to a tournament final victory over top-seeded Texas Wesleyan University with 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as JCC won, 79-72. In the semifinals, he recorded another double-double with 18 points and 11 boards en route to an 83-76 win over Texas College that secured a berth in the national tournament. Jenkins also accounted for 12 points and seven rebounds in a first-round game, and he posted 19 and 10 in the final regular season game last Monday as JCC went 4-0 last week. Jenkins was 20-of-46 shooting from the field and 25-of-33 from the free throw line for the 26-7 Bulldogs. JCC will start play in the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship next week.

Gray, a sophomore guard/forward from Dallas, scored 47 points in Langston's three conference tournament wins. She poured in 23 points and snared 10 rebounds in a 78-63 semifinal victory over Wiley College (Texas) and chipped in 12 points and eight boards in the championship game to defeat JCC's women's team, 67-63. Gray had seven steals in the tournament as well as the Lady Lions extended their streak to 20 consecutive RRAC wins. Langston advances to the NAIA women's tournament Jackson, Tenn., with a record of 28-5.

Chris Berry of Texas Wesleyan University was an additional men's nominee after scoring at least 20 points in all three of his RRAC tournament games. At the outset of the tournament, Berry was named the conference's Player of the Year, and he didn't let up with 65 tournament points and 17 rebounds.
