WACO, Texas --
Valquiria Caboclo of the University of Texas-Brownsville
was named the Red River Athletic Conference Player of
the Week and Hitter of the Week for the dates of Aug.
31-Sept. 6. Additional weekly award winners included
Co-Setters of the Week Daianarah Bracero of UTB and
Evoni Darling of Texas Wesleyan University and Co-Liberos
of the Week Chelsy Covington of TWU and Anayeli Trevino
of UTB.
Caboclo, a freshman middle blocker from Sao Paulo,
Brazil, lifted UT-Brownsville to a 3-0 sweep of NCAA
Division I opponent, UT-Pan American. She pounded home
nine kills on 18 total attacks with just four errors for
a hitting percentage of .278. Caboclo also was credited
with seven digs and three blocks as UTB improved to 6-1.
Bracero, a senior setter from Sabana Grande, P.R.,
contributed 25 assists in the win over UTPA for the Lady
Scorpions to raise her average to 8.67 assists per game.
She also provided 11 digs in the contest.
Darling, a junior setter from Grapevine, Texas,
registered 15 assists and five digs as TWU lost to
Tarleton State University (Texas), 3-0. She also had a
pair of kills for the 1-3 Lady Rams.
Covington, a sophomore libero from Hutto, Texas, pulled
in nine digs against TSU with a 1.000 service percentage
on 18 total attempts.
Trevino, a sophomore defensive specialist from
Brownsville, Texas, collected 10 digs against UTPA and
holds an average of 3.5 digs per game.
Additional Player of the Week nominees included Arika
Butler of Texas College and TWU's Destiny Clemons, while
Brittani Toole of Southwestern Assemblies of God
University (Texas) and TWU's Kristen Venhuizen were
Hitter nominees. SAGU's Rachel Brown was nominated for
this week's Setter award and SAGU's Tina Brown was a
Libero nominee.
