WACO, Texas -- Natalie Ortiz of University of the Southwest (N.M.) and Megan Perez of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) were named Red River Athletic Conference Softball Co-Players of the Week for Feb. 24-March 2, while USW's Ciara Fraher claimed RRAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the same dates. This is the fifth set of awards for the 2014 softball season.
Ortiz, a junior leftfielder/pitcher from El Paso, Texas, drove in eight runs and won a game as a pitcher in a four-game sweep over Texas College. Ortiz opened the series as the starting pitcher, yielding only six hits and no earned runs to earn the 11-2 victory, while going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and four RBIs. While she missed the second game, Ortiz closed out with a pair of RBIs in both of the final two games. She scored five runs and had three doubles as the Mustangs started conference play at 4-0 and raised their season mark to 14-6.
