Xavier's Benbella, LCU's Silva recognized with first RRAC men's soccer weekly awards of the season
WACO, Texas – Nasser Benbella of Xavier University (La.) was named the RRAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Aug. 19-25, while Rodrigo Silva of Louisiana Christian University claimed the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for his play over the same dates. This is the first set of conference winners for the 2024 men's soccer season.
Benbella set a school record for goals in a game with a hat trick as the Gold Rush defeated Florida Memorial University, 6-0. The sophomore forward from Casablanca, Morocco, netted three goals in his second official game with Xavier. The third goal came in the 61st minute as the Gold Rush moved to 1-1 on the season.
Silva held opponents scoreless for more than 187 consecutive minutes as the Wildcats won a pair of home matches last week. The senior goalkeeper from Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, surrendered a goal in the fifth minute of a 3-1 win over Texas Wesleyan University then held the Rams scoreless until LCU could take the lead for good in the 67th minute. Silva then presided over a 4-0 shutout against Nelson University (Texas). The Wildcats are off to a 2-0 start.
