USW stuns field with RRAC men's golf championship, TAMUSA's Pena gains individual title
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Riding a second-round surge, the University of the Southwest captured its first men's golf tournament title as the top team at the 2025 RRAC Men's Golf Championships. The Mustangs edged 25th-ranked Houston-Victoria by two strokes over three rounds at the Golf Club of Texas on Monday and Tuesday.

After the first round, USW was four strokes behind Our Lady of the Lake and part of a pack of four teams, three behind Texas A&M-San Antonio and two behind UHV. Scores were lower in the second round and, especially for the Mustangs, as they posted a team score of five-under-par. They improved 24 strokes over the first round and held a 10-stroke lead over the Jaguars.
UHV, OLLU and TAMUSA all made moves in today's third round but couldn't catch the Mustangs. The top four teams finished within 10 strokes.
TAMUSA's Jacob Pena took the individual title as the only golfer under par for the entire tournament (-1). He finished five strokes ahead of the runner-up, USW's Jesse Valdez. Pena completed a four-year run at the RRAC where he finished in the top 10 each time including an eighth-place finish in 2022, runner-up in 2023, a tie for fifth in 2024, and this year's championship.
USW's Kennedy Bailey-Borges and UHV's Nathan Biais tied for third with UHV's Paul Chopin and TAMUSA's David Rodriguez tying for fifth place. The top six finishers earned RRAC all-conference status.
