LSUS returns to the top of the hill as RRAC baseball tournament champions

SHREVEPORT, La. (May 4, 2026) – LSU Shreveport repeated as tournament champions by overpowering Texas A&M-Texarkana in the title game. The Pilots defeated the Eagles 17-6 to capture the 2026 Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Championship at Pilot Field.

From the outset, the Pilots set a relentless offensive tone, piling up 21 hits and scoring in six different innings. After a quiet first frame, LSU Shreveport broke through in the second and never looked back, highlighted by a decisive five-run fourth inning that stretched the lead and put Texarkana on its heels.

Carlos Sanchez led the offensive barrage with a 4-for-6 performance, three runs scored, and two RBIs, while Carlos Vega added three hits, four runs, and two RBIs in a dominant showing near the top of the order. The biggest swing of the day came from Nazir Mendez, who blasted a home run and drove in four runs, helping the Pilots create separation late. Dorien Jackson also contributed a home run and two RBIs as part of a balanced attack that saw eight different players record hits.

Texarkana showed resilience midway through the game, plating three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to briefly cut into the deficit. Austin Kerns led the Eagles with three hits and two RBIs, while Tobin Jones added a home run. However, LSU Shreveport quickly answered each surge, including a five-run ninth inning that slammed the door on any comeback hopes.

On the mound, the Pilots utilized a staff approach, with Calvin Shepherd earning the win after allowing just one run (unearned) over 2.1 innings. The bullpen combined to limit damage despite scattered hits, striking out 11 Texarkana batters overall.

Texas A&M–Texarkana struggled to contain LSU Shreveport's lineup, cycling through multiple pitchers as the Pilots consistently found gaps and capitalized on scoring opportunities.

Tournament Summary

LSU Shreveport's unbeaten run started with a two-game sweep of Southwest in the first round, including an extra-inning thriller (8-7 in 11 innings) to advance. Texas A&M–Victoria also moved through the opening round with authority, sweeping Jarvis Christian (Texas), while TAMUT battled through a three-game series against LSU Alexandria to reach the final site. Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) emerged from its series with Louisiana Christian after dropping the opener but winning the next two.

At the final site, Texas A&M–Victoria opened with a 15-1 rout of OLLU, but momentum quickly shifted. LSU Shreveport defeated Texarkana 5-1 and then followed with a key 8-5 win over A&M-Victoria, positioning itself as the team to beat.
